Saxophoniste de jazz exubérant et doté d’un talent dynamique, James Carter a provoqué un tollé chez les critiques lorsqu’il a fait son apparition sur la scène jazz new-yorkaise, après avoir quitté sa ville natale de Detroit au début des années 90.

Le premier album de Carter, JC on the Set, sorti au Japon alors qu’il n’avait que 23 ans, puis aux États-Unis un an plus tard, en 1993, a été unanimement salué comme le meilleur premier album d’un saxophoniste depuis des décennies. Les critiques ont salué sa capacité à jouer pratiquement tous les styles de jazz sans jamais donner l’impression d’imiter qui que ce soit. Il a continué à bâtir sur ces premières louanges, explorant la musique de Django Reinhardt dans Chasin’ the Gypsy en 2000, démontrant ses talents classiques dans Caribbean Rhapsody en 2011 et travaillant avec son trio d’orgue soul dans Live from Newport Jazz en 2019.

En tournée en 2026, James Carter interprète « Trane: A Centennial Supreme » avec James Carter au saxophone, Steve Turre au trombone, Gerard Gibbs au piano, Hilliard Greene à la basse et Alex White à la batterie. Ce programme est également disponible avec le James Carter Organ Trio et le James Carter Quartet.

An effusive, dynamically gifted jazz saxophonist, James Carter caused a critical uproar when he appeared on the New York jazz scene, having moved from his native Detroit in the early ’90s.

Carter’s debut recording, JC on the Set, issued in Japan when he was only 23 and in the States a year later in 1993, was universally acclaimed as the finest debut by a saxophonist in decades. Critics lauded his ability to play in virtually any jazz style without appearing to ape anyone. He has continued to build upon these early accolades, exploring the music of Django Reinhardt on 2000’s Chasin’ the Gypsy, displaying his classical skills on 2011’s Caribbean Rhapsody, and working with his soulful organ trio on 2019’s Live from Newport Jazz.

On tour in 2026 James Carter is performing “Trane: A Centennial Supreme” with James Carter on Saxophones, Steve Turre on Trombone, Gerard Gibbs on Piano, Hilliard Greene on Bass and Alex White on Drums. This program is also available with the James Carter Organ Trio and the James Carter Quartet.
